Borussia Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji has left the Swiss national team ahead on time on Friday.
The 24-year-old picked up an injury on his left ankle during Switzerland’s Euros 2020-qualifier against Ireland on Thursday. Akanji, who played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw, left Genf, Switzerland on Friday to return to Dortmund for further diagnosis.
Even though Akanji’s individual errors cost Dortmund dearly in their 3-1 loss against Union Berlin on Saturday, an injury would come at a particularly bad time as the Black and Yellows await Bayer Leverkusen and FC Barcelona at the Westfalenstadion in the coming week.
Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see whether Favre would opt for left-footed Dan-Axel Zagadou to replace Akanji or place right-footed Leonardo Balerdi at RBC.
