Borussia Dortmund kicked-off their array of test matches against Lüner SV on Tuesday. Edin Terzic revealed the timetable for Giovanni Reyna’s return after the 3-1 win against the sixth tier side.
“Gio is working hard on his rehab,” the BVB head coach told reporters, adding: “He did most of it in the United States in coordination with us. Like all other players, he will join us this weekend.”
The 19-year-old only featured in 12 out of a possible 46 matches for Borussia Dortmund in the previous campaign, accumulating only 560 minutes as a re-emerging muscular injury that he suffered while on international duty with the USMNT kept him sidelined.
Terzic continued: “Obviously, we have to be very careful with him. He was out for pretty much a whole year, where he repeatedly tried to return from injury to no avail. His situation is similar to Mateu Morey’s. We must not try to get them back as quickly as possible but to keep them [healthy] for as long as possible.”
Reyna was dealt a devastating blow during his start in April during BVB’s 2-0 win away to Stuttgart. The teenager had to come off in tears just seconds into the game after re-injuring his groin for a third time that season. However, his Terzic reassured journalists that the American is in a better mindset going into the 2022/23 campaign.
The constant injury malaise was tough “especially, for such a young guy,” the 39-year-old said, adding: “But when I’m talking to him right now, he’s full of energy and full of anticipation for the next season. We’re looking forward to having him back, and we hope that he can add more physical stability so that he is able to be on the pitch with us much more often.”
